Checking budget accommodation options in SE asia

Having some experience in travelling SE asia heres a few tips that could save you a bunch of money or just simply give you better value.

If you’re travelling on seriously low budget, most likely you are not arriving your destination by plane but rather on a bus or a train. Often the local people know the transportation timetables and wait for you with their offers for accommodation. After all, its easy to spot someone with huge backpack that theyre looking for a room.

You might want to check out the first offer, but my advice is that you’ll check a few other guesthouses that are in the neighborhood. If the proposed guesthouse is far away, you might ask if they could give you are ride perhaps on a motorbike. Sometimes you are being told that the ride is free if you stay at the proposed guesthouse at least one night.

Often the budget accommodation options are generally in the same area. Have a look on a few places before making up your mind. A lot of guesthouses know that old phrase “location, location, location” all too well and you might actually get a lot nicer room for less money if you just bother to walk a few meters.

Also its possible that the initial room price gets lowered if you mention that you’re going to have a look on other places as well. Another thing to consider is to ask for a discount if you’re staying longer than just a couple of days.

you can try to bargain if its low season or you can ask if they have something cheaper than the room you’ve just shown.

It may sound obvious but nevertheless, always check the room first before taking it. Check the room for general cleanliness and make sure the fan works, there is water in the shower and the bed is relatively clean. Beds often look clean but you could just run your hand on the sheets to feel if theres some dirt around. Some places dont change the bedsheets too often and just make it looks nice. If the place is otherwise okay but dirty bed or something, you might say that you’ll take the room on the condition that they do the necessary changes. Also see if theres electricity outlet and theres nets in windows and openings against mosquitos.

If you agree to rent the room, make sure that both parties agree and understand whats the rate for one night and whats included in the price. Once in a while some mysterious taxes come up from nowhere when you’re checking out and paying for the room. If theres a breakfast included, you might want to ask what kind of breakfast that is. Lastly you can ask what other services they might have at the guesthouse, for example laundry, internet, use of pool, rental of bikes or motorbikes, transport services and so on.

Getting Around Panama (5)

Planes, Trains & Automobiles in Panama

In the city it’s typical to pay less than $5 for a taxi ride to just about any reasonable distance from your hotel including the regional airport. In the small communities of Boquete and Bocas taxi fares drop to $2 or less. Although the town of Bocas is small dragging luggage down Main Street in the heat and humidity can be a pain. Here te taxis will typically charge 50 cents to take you to your hotel.

For getting around the country you can go back-packer-frugal and get from one end of the country to the other for under $20 but the best way to get around is by air.

Panama has two regional airlines – Aeroperlas and AirPanama. They flit around the country to dozens of locations each day and for a pleasantly low amount. A week ago I took a taxi from the Atlanta Airport to a hotel in Suwannee, about a 30 minute ride. The one way fare was over $100. In Panama I can fly all the way from Panama City to David or Bocas del Toro, about a 1 hour flight, for just $75!

On our first visit we were focused solely on Bocas del Toro. While perusing the EscapeArtist website I discovered some really exciting articles about getting rich growing Teak & Noni while living the good life in the Caribbean. If you read my letter about Bocas at LearnAboutPanama.com you now know it was a scam. However, the scam artist himself did give us one good piece of advice. He suggested that if we were coming to see Bocas we might as well check out the rest of the country. He recommended a town called Boquete in the mountains, said is was lovely and quite different. If that suggestion had not been made we would never have discovered our piece of Panama Paradise. That led us to create our Panama Travel Triangle. We would fly from Panama City to Bocas then across to David and return to Panama City from David. It really is a very convenient way to explore most of the country in a short period of time. PC to Bocas costs $75, and Bocas to David $39 inclusive of taxes.

Another adventure is taking the train from Panama City to the Port of Colon – the Freezone. The train leaves Panama from the Corozal terminal around 7AM. It takes about 45-60 minutes to get to Colon. The return leaves Colon at 5:30. The last time I checked it was about $35 round trip and $20 one way. It’s a good idea to buy your tickets in advance as the train is often booked full by Cruise Ship passengers. This railroad was originally built to connect the city of Colon on the Atlantic (Caribbean) to Panama city on the Pacific. This was the very first transcontinental railroad in the Americas. A cautionary note – an entire day is a long time to spend in Colon. Although you can get some great deals in the Freezone this is one of the worst parts of Panama for crime. I suggest you plan ahead to get out of Colon City as quickly as you can. You might want to explore the beautiful Caribbean communities and islands on the coast. Look to Portobello or even a day on the beach at Isla Grande.

The Pan-American Highway (Carretera Panamericana), commonly known as the Inter-Americana, stretches from the Costa Rican border in the west across the country into the heart of the Darien province. There it stops about 50 miles from the Columbian border. The Darien Gap is this area along the border between Colombia and Panama. It is a lush rain forest with one of the highest degrees of bio-diversity in the entire world. The Pan-Am Highway is a real treat by Central American standards, and in some cases even North American standards! It is well maintained and there are plenty of food and gas stops all the way across the Isthmus. The trickiest part of driving in Panama is in the cities and getting out of Panama City itself. Be sure to read my directions at LearnAboutPanama.com Taxis are so cheap I recommend getting about by cab within the city and then picking up your rental car when you are just ready to leave.

Buen Viaje! Happy Tavels!

Living Accommodation

Living accommodation

Dalip Singh Wasan, Advocate.

At a very early stage in life of man on this earth, it had been said that man needs three basic requirements and those were enumerated as a house, clothes and food. And in spite of lapse of centuries, these basic demands are still there, though we have brought so many other demands and without the fulfillment of those demands, we have started thinking that we are still poor and unlucky persons.

Here we are talking of living accommodation that is the house. The man on this earth has already left behind his jungle and mountain life and now he has created so many things with which he can construct a living accommodation for himself and for his family. But the tragedy with the man is still there because in spite of all the materials on his command, he is not having a living accommodation which could be called a living accommodation. In all the countries are still found living in accommodations which are not fulfilling their minimum requirements. They are not living a happy life in the houses in which they are living, because the house provided to them are lacking the following provisions:-

(1) Each couple present in the house is not having a separate room where they could keep their privacy and each child is not having his own separate room to which he could call his own room and keep the same as per his or her own desires. Most of the people in most of the countries are living in one-room house or in two-room houses where they are not having any privacy and therefore, they live like animals. Even the states could not provide living accommodations to the people of their countries. Most of the accommodations provided by the state are not fulfilling these minimum demands and those are provided to the employees as per his or her rank and in this way people who are in lower ranks are having accommodations which are not able to call themselves as living accommodation.

(2) This is not good when rich and powerful people are having their colonies separately from those who are poor and weak people. In India people who are called dalits are not allowed to have accommodations in those colonies which are meant for rich and powerful people or for people who are calling themselves as belonging to rich and of higher classes. And we note that the houses owned by the rich, powerful and by people who are from higher classes have good looking houses while houses of poor, dalits and weak people are not good looking houses.

(3) When we talk of other provisions like fans, cooler, air conditioners, bathrooms, toilets, rooms, furniture, kitchen, store, verandah, kitchen garden good open yard are not available in the houses and only some of the people could provide these provisions in the house.

(4) In most of the houses the people are not having a separate kitchen and thus the smoke is available in each article in the house including clothes which are hung in the room.

(5) There is no separate accommodation for old and elderly people in the house. The bed rooms, the drawing rooms which had been constructed by those people when they were young and they were planning the house have been snatched away by the children and now most of the old and elderly people are accommodated in the space near doors or they are given some place on the roof from where even their voice could not be heard by those who are living in the ground floor. Such a treatment is given to the old and the elderly because the youths are not having their own accommodation. The state must come for the help of these old and elderly people in the house so that they may be able to wait for their death easily.

(6) It must be accepted that children are not provided living accommodation as per their demand and as per their requirements. They must have separate rooms where they should be provided with reading and study facilities. There should be proper light, air and even water should be available in the room.

(7) Each living room must have attached bath room and toilet so that they members living in the room could have their own privacy and they may not be standing in line before the bathroom and before the toilet. If we examine the living accommodations in the world, we shall find that very few people are lucky who could get such accommodation in the house.

(8) Each house must have a small garden.

(9) Each house must have place where clothes could be spread for drying in Sun because this is most important and where such open space is not available, the clothes washed shall not be getting proper Sun light and most of the germs shall remain in the clothes.

(10) There should be space for vehicles so that those could be kept safe and should not be standing outside the house having encroachment on municipal land.

People who live in houses which are not provided with all these facilities are often either sad or mad and they do not behave properly. They are not in a position to have ain introspection and that is the reason they are not in a position to correct themselves That is the reason they do not get time and space to study, to write something, to have a look on the TV or listen to radio. Such people do not remain normal people and they are not progressive in nature. They are not fertile brain and we should not expect much from such people. Therefore, time has come when each family and each government must start from the house and they must make it sure that their people are getting proper accommodation and if they do not pay heed towards this problems, a time shall come when they shall be having all backward and brainless people with them. A good and proper accommodation is the first need of a society which wants to go ahead and take the people in the next phase of life. The present system where even the states themselves are not providing the people with reasonable accommodation are committing a grave crime with humanity because only animals could be collected in such like shed. If we take that we are men and women, then we should live in reasonable accommopdations.

These are the minimum requirements which a living accommodation must provide to the owners of the house and if they are not in a position to have such spaces and items in their house, they shall never admit that they are having a good living accommodation. People like in India would never be able to provide such complete accommodation tot heir people and these facilities shall be in luck of those who own money and who own seats of power. The poor people must remain poor and they must look poor and a true and easy identification of a poor person is that he is not having a good living accommodation. The rich and powerful people would never tolerate that poor people should also own or be provided with living accommodation and wiping out all the differences between the rich and the poor. Therefore, the poor shall have to continue with low type of houses so that the rich and powerful people could say that they are rich and more powerful and they may invite the people to their house just to tell them that they could construct such a living accommodation.

Proper dining etiquette in India

Dining in India is a communal event. One rarely encounters a person dining alone. While there are no written rules of etiquette for dining, everyone seems to know what rules to follow.

Traditionally, people always sat on the floor while eating. The western concept of the “Dining Table” was introduced only when the British came on the scene. Even then , it was viewed as a foreign concept, and most Indians sat on the floor. Today, with space limitations, convenience and modernization, the Dining Table is a standard fixture in a majority of the India homes. There are still some rural areas though, who still practice the old system. Modern or not, during ceremonial events, weddings, etc, one may briefly revert to the system of sitting on the floor to eat, just to keep the tradition.Sitting on the floor should not be thought of as sitting on the bare floor. Far from it. Depending on the status of the family, the diner may sit on a mat, a small wooden decorative plank , or even a silver plank.

In earlier days, food was served on a Banana leaf. Now a days it has been replaced by plates for everyday meals. The plates are usually made of stainless steel. China or porcelain plates are rare. One eats with their hands. At the best, spoons are given while serving sweet puddings in cups. Forks and knife are unheard of, since the common meal of Roti and curry or rice and lentil soup does not need the use of them. For this reason, rule number one is, always wash your hands before sitting down for a meal.

Water is always served with any meal. It is usually served in a stainless steel glass placed to the left of the plate.

There is a reason for the position of the glass of water. This is to indicate that the diner uses his left hand to grab the glass of water and eats with his right hand. Only the right hand is used for eating. It is considered very demeaning to eat with the left hand.

In a lot of households, even today , an elder person will serve the food to the diners. Courtesy and respect is shown to this person. Food is served in moderate portions. The server does not mind returning to serve a second portion. Serving a lot at one time is discouraged because it may lead to wastage, which is much frowned upon. This rule applies when seated at the dining table and serving themselves.

Offering food from one’s plate, even if the item is untouched, is a great offense and never done.Probably this originated in ancient times to discourage the free exchange of germs between people sharing their food. The theory behind this custom,is lost, but the practice continues.

Chatting while dining is okay, but speaking with one’s mouth full is not tolerated.

Everyone waits for one another to finish up. Considering the fact that food is served, this usually means that all are proceeding at the same pace through the various courses of the meal.

Unless it is a very special event, each diner picks up his own plate and glass and takes them away to be washed.

The meal finishes with everyone washing their hands with a generous amount of water.

Small children are free to leave at his point, but the older ones have the task of cleaning up the floor. The floor is well cleaned, washed and mopped after every meal.

How to make an inexpensive fly book

It isn’t uncommon for fly fishermen to have 30 or 40 flies of different sorts and sizes. This can create quite a problem. Keeping them loose in a tackle box or creel is a great way to have an unwieldy mess that can make it difficult to find the fly you want, and almost invariably results in punctures from the sharp hooks. There is a way around this though, use a fly book.

When we talk about fly books, we aren’t talking about books about fly-fishing or on how to tie flies. In fact, we aren’t talking about printed material at all. A fly book is simply a place to store fishing flies so they can easily be selected, while helping to protect the flies from damage.

Fly books can be purchased, and many of the bought variety do a fair job, whether they are a magnetic sort or other construction. However, a good durable fly book can be created without much effort or expense, and this can last for years.

To make a fly book, you need:

1 8 inch x 8 inch square of fake wool

1 8 inch x 9 inch rectangle of leather (soft leather works best)

1 or 2 clothing snaps

Heavy thread

Leather needles

A leather punch (a knife can be used, but it makes the creation of the fly book more difficult)

Step 1: Punch or cut a hole in the leather to contain the male side of the clothing snap(s), and crimp the snap into place. The placement should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch in from the edge, along one of the eight-inch sides of the leather.

Step 2: Turn the leather over, and then sew the fake wool to the leather. It should be sewn all the way around, but flush on three sides so there will be a one-inch overlap of leather.

Step 3: Fold the material in half so the fake wool is on the inside, fold the one inch flap of leather over, and punch a hole or holes for the female ends of the snap so they can snap tight in the male ends. Insert those or that side of the snap. This will hold the book together to protect the flies and prevent them from coming free accidentally.

You should now have a completed fly book, eight inches long and four inches wide, to hold your flies. To attach the flies, simply unsnap the book and slip the hook into the fake wool, then snap it closed again. The fake wool holds the hook in place, yet you can easily remove it by just pulling on the hook.

A fly book made in this way isn’t very expensive, and the leather causes it to last for a long time. Better still, you can arrange your flies according to type and size. This means that by just opening the book, you (or the fly fisherman in your family, if you are making this as a gift) can easily find just the fly that is desired. Also, it means that simply opening the book and taking a quick glance, it is easy to see which flies need to be purchased or tied.

A fly book of this size is capable of holding a surprising number of flies, and since the fake wool is soft, it protects the fur and feathers the fly was tied from. At the same time, the leather protects the fly from the elements.

If you are a fly fisherman and have never used a fly book, you will quickly start to wonder why it took so long to try it. If you make your own book and see how easy it is, you may wonder even more. A fly book is something every fly fisherman can use, and unlike many other things they may have for fly-fishing, it is inexpensive, especially if it is home made. This leads to less time spent finding the fly you want, and more time spent in catching the fish.

Changing Face Of Holidays In The UK

Mainstream holidays in the UK have changed enormously in the last ten years as companies and tourism businesses struggled to cope with the constantly changing customer requirements. This has presented the tourism industry with a series of new challenges that are currently sculpting a new type of travel business.

To understand how the industry has changed and grown it is necessary to look at the internal and external influences that have forced this shift in the UK market These factors can be attributed to a number of changes in society, changes in technology and infrastructural developments that have result in the world becoming a much smaller place. However, to look at the first big change we need to go back 25 years.

The UK holiday market was still in a relatively secure position, with a large percentage of its holidaymakers still taking UK breaks in cottages, holiday parks, B&B’s and hotels. Then in the 80’s cheap package holidays had an enormous effect on the UK mass-market holiday businesses as value for money, guaranteed sunshine and better quality accommodation and food resulted in an exodus. During this period holiday businesses saw a massive fall in guests. This resulted in drastic changes in the way UK holidays were marketed and was the first in a series of challenges – that became opportunities – for the industry.

But it wasn’t simply the advent of the overseas cheap package holidays that presented companies with challenges and opportunities. Arguably the last five years has seen the greatest level of change in the UK market.

Changes in society during the last 15 years have had a great impact on the way people choose to book and take their holidays. The family unit and its 2.5 children changed. More people got divorced and couples had children much later in life as their career took priority. The traditional UK family holiday had therefore changed as their customers social circumstances changed.

These weren’t the only social changes. Working adults increasingly earned more money, but more so than ever before they had less opportunity to spend that money, and were in need of time to relax and enjoy their holidays. Again UK holiday companies and business had to adjust to this trend to ensure that their products matched the changes in the customer requirements.

Another major factor in the changing in UK holidays was a shift in booking patterns. As long as anyone could remember holidays had been booked directly through the holiday outlet or via travel agents – often 6/12 months in advance of that break. In 2000 this pattern changed forever.

The advent of the internet, and the continued growth of home PC’s across all markets, has had a revolutionary impact on the holiday market. For the first time people could independently search for, and book, their perfect holiday anywhere in the world. The could also leave everything to the last minute and decide to take holidays based on the five day forecast – rather than hoping the weather would be nice next June!

The final, and possibly the most important, factor in the changes to the UK market was the arrival of the ‘low-cost operator’. So not only could you book late using the internet, you now had the freedom to go anywhere (roughly with a five hour flight time) at the drop of the hat. The short break market, which had become increasingly important to the UK holiday businesses as traditional one and two weeks holidays dwindled, was facing competition with any city destination in Europe. Now a B&B in Bath had to compete with a hotel in Budapest.

So all of these factors, coupled with changes in customer needs, resulted in a whole new series of challenges for the UK tourism industry.

Potters holiday resort is on the Norfolk/Suffolk coast in the East of England and their website can be found at www.pottersholidays.com However, the UK market hasn’t stood still and to both combat the negatives, and take advantage of the positives, operators, hoteliers and tourist boards have begun to rethink the ‘product’ to respond to the enormous upheaval.

More than ever before tourism businesses are thinking about who their market is and whether they are offering the right product to suit their customer profile. Examples of this change can be seen all over the UK as companies and business are quickly responding to new opportunities created by the shift in customer requirements. The UK has woken up to the diversity of scenery, is rich history, traditional food and new standards of accommodation that has increased the expectation of guests at home and abroad.

Boutique hotels brilliant demonstrate this new way of thinking – a style of UK holiday that was only very niche has responded to the potential of young couples and empty nesters to offer a stylish and unique hotel experience. But it isn’t just ultra trendy niche businesses that have been successful. A great example of this is Potters Leisure Resort on the Norfolk coast. A traditional holiday park, they have adapted their holidays to cater for a new breed of holidaymakers. They now offer short breaks, good food, entertainment and top quality accommodation in an area of the UK holiday market many people considered dead – and they are thriving.

It is also worth noting that in the last few years another more serious series of factors have also provided the UK market with an additional boost. For example, the advent of terrorism, not just the threat of being caught up in the conflict, but the preventative measures that have been put in place, combined with seemingly erratic changes in global weather patterns, have never made the UK a more viable holiday destination for its residents.

So despite all of the challenges and changes the industry has seen over the last few years the picture isn’t all doom and gloom. Far from it. Like any market those business that can, and will, adapt to the give the customer what they want will reap the rewards.

How to Bargain Cheaper Car Rental?

No doubt, car rental has evolved as one of the most fantastic ways to travel at any corner of the world. Car rental provides immeasurable comfort in traveling within the traffic intensive cities or reaching any distant place not well connected with public mode of transport.

As you are choosing car rental as an alternative of public transport for an easy and uninterrupted travel, therefore, it at the same time also charges more on rental for the services provided by renting agencies. So in order to make car rental a convenient deal apart in terms of price a renter needs to follow a number of tips and practices. You can start your car rental spree from planning a car rental trip that you wish to undertake during your journey.

The planned approach can start from selecting preferred car rental agency online after evaluating a number of car agencies online. When attempting to hire a car on rent don’t decide upon luxury car, instead, evaluate all your options well before signing the final deal. Estimate your budget and number of people traveling along you. You can opt for small economy car if traveling alone or in company of one person otherwise you are traveling with family you can choose Sedan.

Next step after estimating your budget in respect of number of travelers as well as car now you should assess about car models, services, as well as rates. For ranging rate you should enquire about highest as well as lowest rates from any car renting agency, special discounts and offers. Also enquire about rates of fuel, insurance, taxes, service charges and costs of baby seats too. This way you should choose a moderate budget for renting a car.

Apart from budget, there are many other important points where you should hang on to select a car on rent. Never buy from a renting agency about which you are listening for the first time as you may be overcharged on credit card for buying from a new company. Always buy from a renting agency that mention on website its prices along with taxes, add on so you can bargain for the price

The other smarter way to ascertain price is car rental discount codes offered online by car renting agencies under various schemes and programs. You can have discount codes if you lie anyways in category of America Medical Association, armed forces, students and senior citizens. You can also have the lower price for car rental if you book car rental as weekend package in place of booking it for a working day.

Apart from the rate and charges, the other important factor that decides upon car rental prices is car rental insurance. Whenever you sign a deal with car rental agency, it is necessary to read all the papers for car renting, carefully; otherwise you may get involved into trouble as car renting agency generally put responsibility over renter in case of damage in accident or theft. So in order to avoid any loss it is better to verify all the information related to car rental as to arrest lowest price on car rental.

Tips for finding accommodations in South Tyrol, Italy

Finding the perfect accommodation for your holidays might be a tough experience, but this does not have to be the case when you travel to South Tyrol (or South Tirol), Italy. With more than 200 years of intensive tourism, the region is literally full of hotels and pensions. However, despite the same 200 years, most of these hotels and pensions do not appear on big sites such as Expedia. And those that do appear are, of course, mainly the big, expensive ones. Does this mean that tourists without local connections have no choice but to pay the price? Not really, provided that they get to know a few things about accommodations in South Tyrol, Italy. Here they are:

Tip 1: search on local sites, not on national or global ones

South Tyrol is not only a geographical region, but also, from administrative point of view, an autonomous province. This means that many things are handled locally and the best place to look for any information is a South Tyrol site rather than anything else. And once you know where to look, you’ll find plenty of information on any issue. So try the” South Tyrol tourism site for general information and the South Tyrol “accommodation finder for booking an accommodation.

If you plan to go to some specific events, search also on the site of the event. Usually they offer on their site a tool for searching and booking accommodations. However, keep in mind to book with a lot of time in advance for truly international events such as the World Championship in Biathlon. For such events it seems that there are never enough hotels and pensions and you might not be able to find something close even 1 or 2 months in advance!

Tip 2: call, not click

Don’t be afraid to make a phone call for securing your reservation. While many pensions and hotels in South Tyrol offer also an on-line form for requesting a reservation, many of them seem to simply ignore such forms. However, they promptly answer on the phone and guarantee your reservation if they are not fully booked. Most of them speak English at least at a basic level and all of them speak both German and Italian.

Tip 3: contact a tourism office

Almost in every little town in South Tyrol (some villages included) there is a tourism office. If you are still in doubt or don’t manage to find on-line the accommodation of your dreams, just contact
