Binge Eating Disorder – Symptoms and Causes

Binge eating also occurs in another eating disorder called bulimia nervosa. Persons with bulimia nervosa, however, usually purge, fast, or do strenuous exercise after they binge eat. Purging means vomiting or using a lot of diuretics (water pills) or laxatives to keep from gaining weight. Fasting is not eating for at least 24 hours. Strenuous exercise, in this case, means exercising for more than an hour just to keep from gaining weight after binge eating. Purging, fasting, and overexercising are dangerous ways to try to control your weight.

Binge eating disorder is a newly recognized condition that probably affects millions of Americans. People with binge eating disorder frequently eat large amounts of food while feeling a loss of control over their eating. This disorder is different from binge-purge syndrome (bulimia nervosa) because people with binge eating disorder usually do not purge afterward by vomiting or using laxatives.

Symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder

When you have binge-eating disorder, sometimes called compulsive overeating, you regularly eat excessive amounts of food (binge). A binge is considered eating a larger amount of food than most people would eat under similar situations. For instance, you may eat 10,000 to 20,000 calories worth of food during a binge, while someone following a normal diet may eat 1,500 to 3,000 calories in a day.

Children and teens who sometimes eat a lot don’t necessarily have binge eating disorder. Kids can have huge appetites, especially during growth spurts, when they need more nutrients to fuel their growing bodies. So it can be difficult to determine whether a child has binge eating disorder. But several signs distinguish someone who binge eats from someone with a “healthy appetite.”

Binge eating symptoms are also present in bulimia nervosa. The formal diagnosis criteria are similar in that subjects must binge at least twice per week for a minimum period of three months. Unlike in bulimia, those with BED do not purge, fast or engage in strenuous exercise after binge eating. Additionally, bulimics are typically of normal weight, are underweight but have been overweight before, or slightly overweight, whereas those with binge eating disorder are typically overweight or obese.

Causes of Binge Eating Disorder

There is no single cause for eating disorders. Although concerns about weight and body shape play a role in all eating disorders, the actual cause of these disorders appear to result from many factors, including cultural and family pressures and emotional and personality disorders. Genetics and biologic factors may also play a role.

The causes of binge eating disorder are still unknown. Up to half of all people with binge eating disorder have a history of depression. Whether depression is a cause or effect of binge eating disorder is unclear. It may be unrelated. Many people report that anger, sadness, boredom, anxiety or other negative emotions can trigger a binge episode.
Impulsive behavior and certain other psychological problems may be more common in people with binge eating disorder.

Biological vulnerability may play a role in developing binge-eating disorder. Both genes and brain chemicals may be involved. In addition, researchers are studying appetite regulation of the central nervous system for clues, along with gastrointestinal changes that might shed light on causes.

Certain behaviors and emotional problems are more common in people with binge eating disorder. These include abusing alcohol, acting quickly without thinking (impulsive behavior), not feeling in charge of themselves, not feeling a part of their communities, and not noticing and talking about their feelings.

A Guide To Car Hire In The UK

Car hire is the term that is used to describe the renting of a vehicle from a company. It usually takes place over short periods of time from a couple hours to a few weeks.

Most car rental companies have comprehensive websites that allow the potential clients to view, reserve and pay for their vehicle hire online.

Typically car hire UK companies are based in airports or busy city areas and they often deal largely with the tourist or business markets. There is also a big market in vehicles that would ordinarily be out of the purchase price range of the hirer.

A large proportion of the British car hire market is made up of vehicles that are hired whilst the hirer’s car is being repaired. There are also a vast number trucks and vans rented out to people that want to move house.

Each company that offers car hire in the UK provide the service with different conditions. Some companies allow the hirer to pick up and drop off the vehicle they hire at different places in the UK. This makes it possible to take a vehicle on a one-way journey and return it near to your destination. Many companies include insurance and roadside assistance as part of the price they quote which makes it easy to manage your budget. Some deals cost more depending on the number of miles the vehicle is driven but an increasing number of companies offer agreements with unlimited mileage.

The history of car hire is said to trace back to the introduction of the first economical version of Ford’s Model T. A Nebraskan man named Joe Saunders is said to have been the first to hire out a vehicle when he lent out his Model T to a travelling salesman that wanted to take a girl out on a date.

Walter L Jacobs opened a car rental business in Chicago in 1918. By 1923 the business was generating $1 million a year and was ultimately bought by John Hertz. Prohibition facilitated a growth in the industry. This was positive for the profitability of the industry however hire vehicles became associated with bootleggers, prostitutes and bank robbers. The reputation has improved greatly since then.

There are two types of car hire company.

Companies such as Alamo and Europcar own the vehicles in their fleet. The other type of company operates like a broker and has access to other companies’ fleets of vehicle. Many car rental companies impose a strict minimum age bracket on their vehicles. Often this means drivers have to be over 25 to rent a hire car.

Many companies also require payment via a credit card. This makes it easier for them to trace the person in event of theft or if the hire company finds faults with the vehicle after the hirer has returned it.

Reasons to tie your own flies

There are so many reasons why an avid or novice fly fisherman should get started in fly tying. Reasons such as saving money, becoming more prepared, the ability to better match local insects, curing cabin fever, and of course the sheer enjoyment of catching fish on a fly that you created.

Saving money is a great reason to start tying your own flies but initially it can be costly. However, in the long run you will generally save hundreds if not thousands of dollars compared to the money you would spend in buying flies, with the average cost per fly being $2. I recommend buying startup kits they come with all the tools you need and usually come with some materials. After that many of the materials you will need are very cheap (well under $10 and the portions tie hundreds of flies) and your only other investment will be hooks. Usually a box of 100 hooks is around $10, compare that to the price of 100 flies which will cost about $2 per fly and if you don’t have a fly shop close by throw in the price of gas and it’s easy to see how you will be saving money.

Next is becoming more prepared, nothing leads to more success when fly fishing than being prepared for anything. Fishing conditions change constantly, whether it’s different insects hatching throughout the course of the day or year, or changing water levels or temperatures. With the ability to tie your own flies and load your fly boxes with patterns that work, you will meet with more success.

Matching flies to local fisheries is something many people don’t take into account when purchasing flies. Insect’s size and coloration may change from stream to stream and lake to lake. Some streams and lakes may have different communities of insects than others. Having the ability to correctly match the insects or prey on the body of water one is going to fish is of huge importance. A quick example, my local trout stream has a great abundance of Slate Drakes, or Isonychia, but they tend to be on the small size about a size 14. The fly shops closest to me only sell Slate Drakes in sizes 10 and 12. Being able to tie a size 14 Slate Drake that exactly matches the local hatch has increased my success with the larger, finicky trout.

Tying flies is also a way to cure cabin fever during winter months or anytime you know that you won’t be able to fish for a while. Sitting down and tying flies is a great hobby by itself. Many people find it very enjoyable to create things and that is exactly what you are doing. Outside of just the enjoyment of tying you will be helping in preparing yourself for the upcoming season or just your next outing.

Finally, and my personal favorite, is the sheer enjoyment you will receive by landing a fish on a fly that you have created. Until experienced, it is one of those wonderful things you come to enjoy from tying your own flies. The joy could come from the fact that you experimented in the fly you tied, or the fact that you precisely matched the hatch, or simply in knowing that what you created worked.

For all the fly fishermen who have been thinking about tying flies hopefully this gives you a reason to get started. My only regret with my own fly tying is that I should have started at an earlier age, don’t make the same mistake!

The slow food movement explained

Slow Food: The answer to a fast life

Contrary to what the name implies, the Slow Food Movement is not wholly about eating snails and turtles, nor is it about having lousy service at a restaurant. Instead, it is an anti-fast food movement, a grassroots international campaign to slow down and preserve the pleasure of enjoying food.

The concept of eco-gastronomy, or the relationship between what we eat and our environment, is the driving force behind the movement, founded in 1986 by Carlo Petrini. The Slow Food Movement simply strives to keep food good, clean, and fair:

GOOD: Slow Food should taste good. Supporters of the movement believe that we must learn how to taste food again by awakening our senses to what we are eating: the textures, flavors, and scents. We can learn this from various food experts and from sharing with one another. The Slow Food Movement has several venues for food appreciation education. The most basic is a convivium, or a local chapter of the movement. These groups meet together and participate in various activities to enhance understanding and knowledge in the community. Taste Workshops are held at larger events, and feature experts who teach tasting and pairing of food and drink. The Slow Food Movement even has its own university: The University of Gastronomic Science, to unite the study of science and food.

Good food also comes from our cultural heritage, and a major focus of the movement is preserving these food traditions. Enjoying food in all its varieties and styles-from organic vegetables to artisan bread, heirloom tomatoes to handmade cheese, Southern dishes to Northwest wines-is an important aspect of the Slow Life. Taking the time to savor and share these traditions increases the sense of pleasure in life for families and communities.

CLEAN: Slow Food should be clean inside and out. This means that it should be healthy for us and for animals, and that it should be healthy for the environment. The Slow Food Movement seeks to promote methods of food production that are eco-friendly and sustainable. The goal is a network of sustainable food on local, national, and international levels. The Slow Life also includes taking steps to preserve and appreciate our surroundings.

FAIR: Slow Food is fair to the producer. Slow Food believes that the industrialization and mass-production methods of today corrupt what is good and pure about food. The movement encourages and supports producers and methods that create quality food. Events and networks are organized on the local, national, and international level to help connect those who produce excellent products with consumers. We as consumers are referred to as co-producers, because our informed choices can benefit and affect the direction of food production and consumption.

The Slow Food Movement is indeed a revolution on a world-wide scale, with a presence in 50 countries on five continents. Hundreds of thousands of producers and co-producers attend their international events, while over 80,000 members make up the many convivia around the world. The Slow Food Movement and its Slow Life have a unique perspective on making the world a better place to live. It is a movement that is coming-slowly-to a table near you.

Apartment Search

When you are apartment hunting, prepare a rental search plan. Be sure to know in advance what you want in an apartment and what you can live without. Decide in advance what areas of the city you could consider living in and make a list of apartment buildings within that perimeter.

Be sure to consider how far and how convenient it will be for you to travel to your job or your school or your family and friends. Also, how far is the apartment from stores, banks, hospitals, Church (if you attend) etc. If you have a car, make sure that there is adequate and convenient parking space 24/7. If you don’t drive make sure that there is close by public transportation.

Narrow your apartment locating to the size of rental unit you need. Studio apartment or one bedroom apartment or 2 BR apartment or more. Are you considering a furnished apartment or do you possible need a short term rental. If you are renting an apartment with a cat, dog, or other pet, you need to find out which apartments allow renting with pets and which do not. And, if they do allow pets, is there an additional security deposit required and if so, how much it is. Do you need an apartment complex with an exercise room or tennis courts or a pool or a recreation room, etc. or do you simply need and desire a nice clean and quiet pad.

Be realistic about what you can afford. Most apartment renting guides suggest that your rent should not be more than 25% to 30% of your income. This can vary depending on the income bracket, but be sure to be “real world” when budgeting additional apartment expenses such as heating and air conditioning and other utilities. If you fall short of affording the apartment of your choice, you might consider sharing an apartment with a roommate or roommates. Keep in mind that living with roommates can help you afford an upscale apartment or even, in some cases, luxury apartments, but it also has extreme restrictions to your privacy.

If you are familiar with the area and its neighborhoods, that gives you a distinct advantage for your apartment search. If, however, you are relocating to a new city or are not particularly knowledgeable about the city, you may want to contact an Apartment Locator or an Apartment Finder.

Once you narrow your search for apartments down to apts which suit your needs and desires you must be well organized & well prepared for your visits to the apartment complexes. When inspecting the rental premises be on the alert for unsafe conditions, excessive noise from traffic or playgrounds or neighbors. Visit the apartment building at night as well as the daytime hours. This will give you a more comprehensive understanding of the total space you will be residing in.

When you find the apartment complex that meets your renting needs and desires, you must be ready to put your “best foot forward” when you meet the apartment’s rental agent. This person may be the apartment building manager or a renting agent for the apts. You should prepare for this apartment renting interview in a professional and intelligent manner. Be advised that you are going to be asked to provide proof that you are a reliable prospective tenant. You are most likely going to need references from previous landlords. You may also be required by the apartments to show that you are gainfully employed and can afford the rent. Many landlords may require a credit report. If you are a first time renter and/or you have limited credit history you may be asked for references from family, friends, employer, professionals, etc. Likewise if you are renting with bad credit you will certainly want to come to the interview with a strong selection of references.

You are not necessarily restricted from apartment renting with less than perfect credit, but you may be required to put up an additional security deposit and possibly have a credit worthy person co-sign the apartment lease with you. Don’t unprepared for by requests for any of these things. Be sure to fill out a 100% truthful apartment rental application and come to the interview with references, proof of employment, credit information and any other renting resources at the ready. If you do have a credit history or renting history that might be detrimental, going through an apartment locator or apartment finder may be the best solution. They will present your history to the landlord for you, (make sure they are 100% truthful about it) and they can also be quite helpful and save you a lot of time because they most likely will know which landlords and apartments are more lenient in these circumstances. They can also advise you as to exactly what kinds of references and documents you might need to prove that you can be a responsible tenant.

You Have Located Your “Dream Apartment”

Once you have located your “dream apartment”, or as close to your perfect apartment as possible, now it is necessary to pay extremely close attention to the particulars of the rental agreement. An Apartment Lease is a contract between you and the landlord. Once agreed upon and signed by the tenant and the landlord, the rental lease creates obligations and restrictions for both parties. The most obvious covenants of the apartment lease are the length of the rental, (Six month lease, one year lease, two year lease, etc.) The amount of the security deposit, when the rent is due, who is responsible for what utilities. Also in that apartment lease, however, are stipulations, (sometimes in small print) that can cover a great variety of landlord and tenant obligations and restrictions.

They can include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Maintenance of the apartment

* Care of the premises

* Cleanliness

* Insurance

* Governmental regulations

* Eminent Domain

* Nuisance and noise clauses

* Stipulations as to the circumstances whereby the landlord can enter the premises

* Use of Common Areas

* Keys and locks

* Loss or damage

* Parking

* Pets

* Plumbing

* What the landlord may do if the rent is in arrears

* What the tenant can do to bring the rent current before any kind of action might be started

* Non performance or breach of the contract by the renter

* Renter’s penalties in the event of early termination

* Circumstances which might cause the tenant or the landlord to break the lease prior to the end of the term

* Heat and other utilities

* Removal of goods

* Surrender or Non-Surrender of the premises

* Waivers of various obligations

* Prohibited reprisals

* Garbage disposal

* Recyclables

* And the list goes on and on and on.

Prospective tenants should read an Apartment lease thoroughly. Prospective apartment renters should understand everything that is contained in that lease and make an informed decision to be 100% accepting of all the provisions for both the tenant and the landlord, that you are positive that you can live up to your end of the bargain and that you are comfortable with the provisions on the landlord’s end.

If you do not understand every single clause of that apartment lease then do not sign it until you do understand it. If necessary and if possible, request assistance in interpreting the lease from a trusted source such as a knowledgeable friend or family member or employer or professional, or anyone else who can understand it and explain it to you. If necessary get legal advice. It can cost additional funds if you do not qualify for free legal assistance, but that additional cost might save you a ton of money and save you a ton of heartache and aggravation down the road.

If you do not agree with any of the provisions of that apartment lease and/or you feel that you can’t live up to the tenant’s obligations, or if you are not in agreement with any of the landlord’s rights under the agreement, then do not sign the lease until/or unless it can be changed to your satisfaction. If the apartment rental agreement cannot be amended to meet your needs and desires and comfort level then do not sign the lease and do not rent that apartment. The Apartment Rental agreement that you sign as a prospective tenant will not change once you become the actual tenant of that apartment.

Good luck in your apartment search and good luck in your new apartment.

Cheap Airfares: Understanding The Basics Of It

As a smart traveller, you should always be looking for ways to travel cheap and getting cheap airfares is the first thing you need to plan.

Savings on cheap airfares means you can save your money for something more luxurious you can enjoy on the trip – like a hotel suite or a first class flight or simply a free second trip.

And if you travel by air, you would already know that airfares cost typically forms the dominant chunk of your travel bill be it leisure or holiday.

And so, it goes without saying that saving something like 30%-50% on those airfares on average, every time, will go a long way to put extra money into your travel itinerary – that otherwise would have gone into the hands of airlines and their shareholders.

But it can get really confusing out there when people talk about cheap airfares.

Everybody is advertising cheap airfares nowadays and what you thought you might have gotten a great deal may turn out to be second or even fifth best after you found out how cheap airfares in the industry really works.

Airlines, travel agents, tour operators, travel advisors, everybody wants a chunk of your travel money and unless you know how the airfare system works, you will simply not getting the best deals in town.

And it does matter where, why, how and when you are flying because your airfare savings depend on all of the above.

And it also matters what you prefer:

– cheapest airfares without any comfort,
– cheap airfares but with comfort and style, or
– cheapest but you are actually not getting those cheapest airfares.

The best is obviously the middle choice. The first one is not exactly one that a typical traveller would choose for obvious reasons and the last one is just a throw-down and plain deceiving.

Flying on cheap airfares with comfort and style is what most of us would go for.

Well, to get the cheapest airfares but yet fly in comfort and style, you just have to understand how the airline and air ticketing industry work.

While the whole industry airfare intricacies are obviously not comprehensible by just an explanation in this one article alone (the travel industry is one of the biggest sectors in the world), travellers can still get cheap airfares and good air ticket savings by getting a basic understanding of the industry first and how all the players fit in.

One of the most important distinctions is that a deregulated market airfare system like in the US is far different from the international airfare market. The rule of thumb is that it’s certainly harder to exploit cheap airfares in a deregulated market.

This does not mean you cannot get cheap airfares in these markets, note this carefully, it just means compared to the average other Joe traveller in the market, you do not really get that significant a major advantage.

That said, there are loopholes of course, and cheap airfare tactics and strategies to exploit.

Note that there are more opportunities to get cheap airfares comparatively on international travel and it is a shame that common travellers do not exploit even these avenues.

Most sites will be advertising their cheap airfares gimmick but after understanding how the industry works, you are likely to wise up to these low airfare tactics.

Essentially, there are two major types of fares that is published and unpublished fares and this determines whether you get the cheap airfares that you want.

Published airfares are those which are available on the computerised reservation systems used by airlines and travel agents and which list down most of all the published airfares approved and filed with the respective countries’ governments.

For international airfares, these are regulated by the one sole dominant body called the International Air Transportation Association (IATA). These airfares got to be registered and approved by IATA and the respective governments who have aviation agreements between them.

IATA is the monitoring body of these agreements.

As a condition of membership in IATA, airlines agree to sell their air tickets only at IATA-approved prices. IATA regulations strictly forbid the direct discounting of air tickets directly to passengers.

In case you are pondering, more than 90% of the airlines companies worldwide are members of IATA.

The good news however is that airlines do discount their airfare prices unofficially off their published prices to travel agents/sellers who buy in bulk and get the large discount from the airlines. Right, that is where you can really get cheap airfares.

These discounts are passed on to consumers in the form of cheaper airfares. Note that strictly under IATA rules, airlines are not actually allowed to do any discounting of their approved published air ticket prices.

But it happens nonetheless as not all airlines seats are sellable at 100% their published prices.

These cheap airfares agents/sellers are known in the industry as consolidators/bucket shop/discounters (the terms are typically used interchangeably although there are subtle differences between them). Basically, you need to find these sellers for a truly cheap airfare deal.

The rule of thumb is that you should always seek out cheap unpublished fares from a consolidator especially on international routes. The next time you buy air tickets, ask your travel agents to seek out the cheapest consolidator airfares first and then compared them to the published airfares directly from the airlines.

Or buy online yourself from these airfare consolidators. Most of them don not sell to the general public (only to registered travel agents) but increasingly, many do.

Some of the good ones include www.onetravel.com, www.flights.com, www.priceline.com, etc., which are some of the largest ones in the US. You can save as much as 40%-60% of the typical published airfares and be amazed.

Eventually, you excuse yourself from the dinner table only to eat later in your room alone, or sneak downstairs for a midnight meal.

2)You start hiding food.

This is called hording. You might find that you are buying or stealing food then tucking it away for later consumption when you’re alone.

The main thing is that you will feel sneaky or guilty, but don’t think it’s a big deal because you think you are in control while the food piles up.

3)You eat to extremes.

There are three extremes when it comes to eating disorders.

You can be really hungry and refuse to eat, at least until you can control the situation, like being alone in your car.

Or, you could be really nervous, upset, or just had a bad day, so you binge. This means you eat a lot of food in a short period. People usually binge on the food they’ve horded because they know what they’re doing is wrong and they don’t want anybody to find out.

Then, there are people who binge until they are so full they vomit. There are also people who binge and force themselves to vomit. Either way, people who do this describe the feeling of getting rid of the food as a release of tension.

4)You find yourself lying about your eating habits.

It’s only a matter of time before people notice you’re not eating, or not eating in front of them.

At first you might try to show them that you’re eating, but eventually the anxiety of eating for show will drive you to start lying.

“I ate before” , ” I’ll eat later”, and “I’m not hungry right now” may not feel like lying, but in your heart you know you are losing control, and no matter what your method of extreme eating is, it’s getting harder to satisfy the control.

Most eating disorders are about control. It may be that you’re controlling feelings of anger, or sadness. You could be trying to control the people around you by controlling your body and what you put into it.

But for what ever reason, know that by taking action and getting help you are taking control and fighting for your body and your health.

Talk to your parents. If they are in denial (which sometimes happens) go to a trusted adult such as a school or camp nurse, counselor, or you can call your pediatrician or doctor.

There are many treatment options available, especially if you are ready and willing to participate in your care.
