Celebrating 100 Years of the British Holiday Camp!

Imagine choosing between a guest house with a set of strict rules – and a landlady ready to enforce them, or a holiday camp with tents and daily chores to complete. Doesn’t sound like much of a choice, yet these were the accommodation options for those holidaying in Great Britain’s seaside resorts in the 1900s.

Given these were the only options, the ‘freedom’ offered by the holiday camp was instantly appealing and holidaymakers were welcomed at the UK’s first holiday camp in 1906 at Caistor-on-Sea, Norfolk. By today’s standards the camp was incredibly basic and certainly had no luxury accommodation on offer! Yet it paved the way for a holiday genre that has been thriving for more than 100 years.

Holiday camps continued to make steady progression and 1924 saw the arrival of a holiday camp in Hopton-on-Sea which boasted brick chalets, running water and electric lights – some of the ultimate facilities. However, global events were to have a serious impact on holidays with two World Wars, and the take over of holiday camps to be used as military bases in the Second World War.

Holiday camps really came into their own with a glorious golden era during the 1950s and 60s after the end of WWII. People hadn’t been on holiday for many years and many children had never seen the sea. Life had been incredibly hard and the public were in need of fun and entertainment. The holiday camp could provide all this and more. With swimming pools on site, entertainment in the evenings, competitions including ‘Glamorous Granny’ and ‘Knobbly Knees’ plus plentiful food the camps offered all the right ingredients for an fun and affordable family holiday.

While the offer of cheap sea and sun holidays drew many people to destinations such as Spain in the 1970s, UK holiday resorts such as Great Yarmouth have seen a resurgence of visitors in recent years. As the cost of living continues to soar and with the need to consider ‘greener’ ways to travel, a Great British seaside holiday – with glorious beaches, strolls along the pier and ice cream – is an attractive proposition.

And where better to stay than a holiday village? A far cry from their 20th Century counterparts, Great Yarmouth is home to some of the UK’s best including some with 5-star ratings. With the promise of modern accommodation, a huge range of indoor and outside entertainment for children and adults and onsite eateries, it’s the ideal choice for families.

Great Yarmouth has invested more than £25 million in redeveloping the seafront, creating a stunning new promenade area for visitors to stroll along, and a beautifully lit pedestrianised walkway linking the seafront to the town centre. The town’s rich maritime heritage is evident all around, with a heritage quarter rich in history to explore. The many holiday parks and villages along this part of the coastline expect a bumper year in 2008.

On Private tours you have a driver guide that will handle that easily. Other driving issue relevant to Israel is: knowing where you are not allowed to drive for military reasons or for security reasons. Not that it’s dangerous! • Budget – Private tours are not cheap (Compared to joining a group tour) but if you travel with your family or friends that share the costs, it’s really worth it. The friendly atmosphere and personal touch on private tours, worth every Shekel.
  • Wasting time- your time in Israel is valuable therefore you don’t want to waste your time waiting for other people. In any group tour you will have this guy of family that is always late. You will wait for them in the morning on departure from the hotel and you will wait for them when they are shopping during the tour. The only way to maximize tour site seeing time, is by taking a Private tour guide in Israel. Not only you will maximize your time, you will do it in a very ease and tranquil manner.
  • Friendliness- Your tour guide is someone who looks in your eyes, talks to you from a close distance and shares the adventures and experiences with you at the same time. From our experience the tour guide turns into a family member right from the beginning.
  • Shopping and restaurants – professional tour guide will also know where the good shopping places to be are, he can advice you for what should be a reasonable price for something. Private tour guide in Israel can recommend to you and take you to good non touristic restaurants, authentic restaurants that you will not find on your tour book.
  • Meeting Israelis- with a private tour guide you will have the opportunity to meet face to face with Israelis. Touring a country, especially a country like Israel, is not just site seeing. A very important part of Touring Israel is by knowing its people. With a private guide you will be able to sit down and talk to Israelis, understand their way of life and their culture.

The Best Escorted Tours for Families

An escorted tour is a great option when planning a family vacation. Escorted tours provide the benefit of spending time with your family while enjoying the culture and landmarks of the area you are visiting. There are tour companies which cater specifically to family vacations such as Adventures by Disney, Tauck Bridges Tours, and Globus Tours.

There are few companies that provide fun for the entire family like Disney; fortunately this value spreads to tours as well. The company that brings your family the animated classics of Aladdin and Lion King also can bring you that magic with Adventures by Disney vacations. With over fifteen different packages, you are sure to find a place to visit that will enlighten your entire family’s imagination. Each tour consists of no more than thirty to forty passengers, with two guides to make your vacation special. These guides are knowledgeable about the destinations that you will be visiting, and can provide information to meet just about any of your needs.

However, there is more to these tours then just places and history. These great family tours are also prepared to make things interesting for the wide range of ages that may be present. Their goal is to make the information that is being presented and the activities that are performed worthwhile for every person on the trip. Another feature of the Disney tours is local experts. At many of the destinations, you and your family will meet individuals who actually participate in the cultural activities that are being showcased. A few examples of these experts are artisans and scientists. If you are looking for an escorted tour for the whole family you can put your trust in the same company that has been entertaining families for generations.

With eight options for destinations, the Globus Tours Company offers an exciting option for your family vacation.

There are many places you can go, and many sights to see when vacationing as a family. The potential for fun is unlimited, but so is the potential for stress. Choosing a Jamaica Tour

Are you in the process of planning a trip to Jamaica? After making your all-inclusive Jamaica travel arrangements, you will start to examine nearby attractions and activities. When doing so, you will find that you have many Jamaica tours to choose from. Each vacation tour is a must see in its own right. You may have a hard time deciding. What factors should you take into consideration?

Activities. For most travelers, a trip to Jamaica is a dream come true. Look at it as more. Look at it as your opportunity to try new things and have the adventure of a lifetime. What activities do you enjoy or what new things would you like to try? As previously stated, you have many Jamaica tours to choose from. Just a few of your options include horseback tours, hiking tours, jeep tours, ATV tours, snorkeling tours, treetop canopy tours, and boat tours. What are your favorite activities? You should be able to find tours centered around them.

Likes and dislikes. Although you are encouraged to try something new on your trip to Jamaica, always keeps your likes and dislikes in mind. Do you not like pets? If so, a horseback ride and swim tour may not be your best option. If you do opt for one, consider a shortened ride, such as one that only lasts one or two hours. The last thing you want is to be stuck on a vacation tour that you find boring.

Age requirements. If traveling to Jamaica solo, with a romantic partner, or a group of friends, you should not run into any problems with age restrictions. However, if traveling to Jamaica for a family vacation, they are very important. These age restrictions will vary depending on the company hosting the tour. Some horseback riding tours have age restrictions as young as six and others only accept riders over the age of 16. Treetop canopy tours are an adventure and a child’s dream come true, but due to the danger children under 18 are usually prohibited from participating.

Length. Jamaica tours are perfect for travelers in that you can always find what you want or need. There are hundreds of tours available for tourists. Of course, you want to consider the activity, but consider length too. Do you have other activities planned? Do you think it would be too much for your body to spend eight hours on a horse? Jamaica vacation tours typically come in two formats, hourly tours and daylong tours. If you would like to salvage some of your day, opt for a tour that only lasts two or three hours.

Costs. Jamaica tours come in a number of different formats. As previously stated, there are tours for all different types of activities, tours that last a few hours and those that last all day. The longer the tour, you more you will pay. But, always price compare. For example, there are a number of companies in the Montego Bar area that offer horseback ride and swim tours. Compare prices to find the best deal. Never pay more than you need to.

What is included. As previously stated, Jamaica tours come in a number of different formats. Even tours that are similar, such as horseback ride and swim tours, vary greatly. Always compare prices, but compare inclusions too. A tour that includes lunch will cost more than one that does not. With that said, you may get a better value for your money. Plus, you do not have to worry about carrying around a bagged lunch or money. The key to choosing the perfect Jamaica tour isn’t just about finding the cheapest price, but also getting the best value for your money.

Location to all-inclusive resort. Finally, it is important to consider the location of your tour and your all-inclusive Jamaica resort. Jamaica is a relatively small island. It is easy to travel from one resort community to the next, but you may not have to. Most of these resort communities have jeep, ATV, boat, and horseback tours available. Don’t travel one hour when you could have opted for a five minute drive.

Understanding and Commissioning a Virtual Tour – a Beginner’s Guide

A virtual tour is a complete 360-degree view of a space. The user can feel as if they’re standing within a space, and then can control their movement within the area. They can look up above them, at the floor below them, and all around. Users are also able to zoom in and out, giving them the ability to focus in on areas of interest. Each virtual tour is usually made up from a number of photographs which are ‘stitched’ together

Where are they used?
One of the most familiar applications of virtual tours is by estate agents. These virtual tours tend to be small scale, and low-quality, as price is the biggest issue.

High-resolution virtual tours that can be viewed at full screen are the best option for any organisation for whom quality is important. A hotel group will use virtual tours to show the potential clients the quality of the rooms. Other examples of potential virtual tour customers include conference centres, museums, hospitals, car manufacturers, football clubs, universities, architects and property developers – all of whom benefit by showing off their space to its best advantage.

What extra features can a virtual tour have?
You can use the virtual tours in many different ways on your site, depending on how you’d like to display them. Virtual tours can be linked to a floorplan, so that users can feel orientated and choose how and where to move within a space. This is particularly useful for architects or property developers. Eye Revolution have created an example of this type for The Edison bar and lounge.

A Google Maps interface enables users to see virtual tours that are geographically removed from each other – a large number of virtual tours can all be linked via a map. Britannia Vista offers an excellent example of this type of implementation.

Many virtual tour providers will also be able to integrate hotspots – special links within a virtual tour. You may even want to include an audio script, a soundtrack or even some video in your virtual tours.

Talk to the virtual tour companies about the project, and they will be able to suggest interfaces that may be appropriate for you.

What’s the advantage of a virtual tour on your website?
A virtual tour which is relevant to the viewer can help both build a brand and sell a product. So in the case of an architect’s website, where part of their portfolio is available to be toured, the viewer is able to see the quality of the architect’s work, choose where they’d like to focus on (rather than being dependent on the ‘right’ stills being provided) and then zoom in and see the small details. This gives the company a big advantage over their competitors as potential clients get a better insight into the product on offer.

How should I choose a virtual tour provider?
The good news is that there’s a lot of choice out there. The bad news is that there are some very poor providers too. The best bet is to make a shortlist of virtual tour providers and then have a very thorough look through their portfolios. Look for ‘stitching errors’ – places where the photographs that make up the tour don’t line up properly. Look for clarity – are the lines clear and sharp, or fuzzy, pixellated or indistinct? Can you see odd colours which don’t look ‘right’, particularly on edges of objects in the tours. Check for over-exposure – so can you see through windows, or are they all white and hazy? Can you look around a full 360-degrees, or are the ceilings and floors blocked off?

If you’re looking for a high quality virtual tour, it’s vital that your providers are good photographers. If they’re poor photographers, nothing will make your virtual tour look as good as it should.

So, going through their portfolio to make sure that you’re happy with the quality of their virtual tour work and that they’ve got a good range of clients and experience is vital to the success of your virtual tour project.

Is it expensive?
This depends on the type of project that you’re commissioning. Talk to the providers you’ve shortlisted, describe your project in as much detail as possible and ask them to quote. A ‘menu’ of prices (where you can see the cost per virtual tour, rather than the total cost for 10 virtual tours) is often useful, as it enables you to compare like with like.

The important thing to note is that the old adage still applies – if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys! Good virtual tour providers will be investing in new equipment, training and software on an ongoing basis. They will also be expert in retouching, and can use their skills to ensure your tours look as good as they can. This investment means that you get the best possible end result, and as you’re going to live with it on your website – possibly for a number of years – you want to make sure that the virtual tours are perfect. If you’re being offered a deal that seems to good to be true, again, look back carefully at the portfolio and assess the quality again.

How do I get it on my website?
Your virtual tour provider will provide you with files which can be uploaded to your site, or they can be hosted on your virtual tour provider’s server. They will be able to liaise with your web designer to ensure the smooth delivery and upload of the virtual tours.

There are several plugins through which people can view virtual tours (for example, Flash, QuickTime, Java, Shockwave and OpenGL). Flash’s high penetration (97% in developed markets) tends to make it the main choice, however, providers will be able to discuss the best options with you.

So finally…
Good virtual tours that stand the test of time and enhance your site visitors’ experience will be likely to increase sales, will encourage people to return, and may over time increase the traffic to your website.

How to get the travel bug

I don’t believe you can ‘get’ the travel bug. It’s one of those things that we are born with and whether or not you’ve discovered it, once you have it, you’ve got it for life.

So the question really should be: How to discover the inner travel bug? How do we uncover that little secret spot in our hearts that wants to get out of our comfort zone and start traveling?

To answer the question we should first understand what a travel bug is. The travel bug really is the desire to travel. To discover the travel bug is like opening up a whole new world. When we are presented with our first opportunity to travel and experience different cultures and people, it will naturally tap into our curious nature and the inner desire to want to travel more.

Want to get to know your inner travel bug?

The first obvious answer is to travel. Preferably travel to somewhere completely different to your background and culture. Try South East Asia or South America, where there are rich and colorful cultures completely different to what they call the ‘western norm’. Experience how they live, what they eat and the many stories that goes with their traditions and festivities and let your curiosity boom.

Look at everything. Speak to different people. Meet your fellow traveler and when you return home, share your experience with your family and friends.

The desire will come, when you have settled back in your daily life and realizing that you thirst for more.

Or, if you are still waiting to save up for your first trip, then start reading and looking at photos of various locations. The travel section of bookshops are great. Go and spend an afternoon flipping through several books on different countries and photography books, soak in the beauty of this world and start day dreaming: Where would I like to go? The more you read and learn, the more desire you’ll have to want to visit these places.

The more you travel, the more likely you’ll uncover that inner travel bug; the stronger the bug, the more you’ll want to travel. Let your travel bug grow by becoming more adventurous and daring; seek out your most desired destinations and go for it; seek out the odd locations off the beaten path; learn more about the cultures, speak to the people; the more you learn and hear, the more your travel bug will grow.

Once your travel bug has matured, it’ll make you want to travel everywhere, even to the most remote parts of your own country, where many of us fail to realize, are the best travel destinations and a chance for all of us to learn more about where we come from.

And if by the end of all this, you still haven’t got the travel bug and feel like you are being forced to travel, perhaps you are one of those who simply weren’t born with the bug. There is no need to compete for the travel bug, so in this case, simply sit back and enjoy life the way you want it to be.

Disney vacation package: How to choose between Disneyland, Disney World or a Disney Cruise

When I hear the words Disney vacation package, I become fully attentive to the discussion at hand. Who doesn’t love a Disney vacation? In my opinion, a Disney vacation at Disneyland, Disney World, or a Disney Cruise can be the vacation of a lifetime. The ultimate decision is up to you and your family.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California, is where all of the Disney fun originated, and has evolved into a Disney fanatic’s dream! Main Street U.S.A. is filled with horse drawn street cars, as well as the occasional double decker bus. The magic that fills the air will pull you and your family in. Splash Mountain, along with Big Thunder Mountain can provide hours of entertainment for the whole family. Vacation packages within Disneyland include stays at the three hotels on the Disney property, as well as park tickets. If your vacation is going to be an all inclusive Disney vacation, by all means, book a vacation package to enjoy a week of fun at Disneyland.

Maybe you enjoy the Sunshine State, otherwise known as the state of Florida. Kissimmee, Florida, is home to the Walt Disney World Resort. It wasn’t until the early 1970’s that this popular resort area opened and has since flourished into a mecca of entertainment for all Disney fans. With four theme parks on the property, you will not be bored! The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom are all parts of Walt Disney World vacation packages. With several value, moderate, and deluxe accommodations to choose from; your resort will be a get-a-way in itself. When you opt to book a Walt Disney World vacation package you will be booking a vacation the whole family will treasure.

If you and your family truly love the water, than by all means, book a Disney vacation package through the Disney Cruise line. There are three, four, and even seven day cruises. Should you have the desire to vacation with Mickey both on and off the water, you will want to book a by land/by sea Disney Cruise vacation package. You will spend 3 days on land and 4 days at sea, or vice versa. Port Canaveral, Florida is home to the Disney Cruise line. Here is where you will board the Disney Wonder or Disney Magic. Once on board, Disney provides top notch hospitality and allows the magic of Mickey to set in.

Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and the Disney Cruise Line, all offer exceptional vacation packages. Logistics may also play a role in which vacation package you ultimately choose. Choose the vacation package that meets the needs of your family and all of their dreams. Vacations come and go, but the memories that Mickey Mouse and his gang will leave you with, will fill your hearts with happiness for a long time!
